I have been reading about the Lumiere brothers’ exploits with the cinematographe recently in relation to the trick effects employed in the early days of moving pictures. Here is David Lynch’s attempt using the same equipment and limitations they would have had. All the effects and editing are done in camera and the rule says no synchronised sound. The other limitation of not going over...
Press Center | David Lynch Foundation Television
I love this. “Talk… with words” he advises. No way Dave.
Interesting approach though. Don’t tell your departments how to do something. Let them work it out for themselves. He doesn’t point out the additional boon of gaining another perspective on the idea here but he does note the morale boost of giving the team...

Film Club
It seems that the Film Club I used to find crew members has gone somewhere I wasn’t quite expecting it to. Terry has been most effective at turning it to his own advantage by getting a film project of his off the ground. I have to admit that, as noted in the previous post, I have also found it extremely useful in gathering crew together. I see a lot of my peers only working with people they...

Team works
I set out to use the development project to experiment with crew and specialist help. With the specialists it’s a question of having a reciprocal arrangement. We involved Jody Holliday because, although we had done our own blood and gore for the short horror, Fallout, that we shot in first year, we wanted the wounds etc to stand up to closer scrutiny than that. Mark had worked out a shot list that ensured continuity would be easier to cope with which, as director, I did...
Pathlights Short Film | David Lynch Foundation... →
I enjoyed this. It’s kind of a zen detective mystery. Very unusual but then, what would you expect on the David Lynch Foundation website? A nice short to analyse. A shame it’s only available online till Wednesday.
Behind the scenes episodes proved as enlightening as you could wish for. Maybe a bit too enlightening, I detected a slightly evangelical tone regarding meditation. Yes,...

Tie it up...
I was very disappointed that as it drew closer to the day of the shoot it became more difficult to get in touch with our principal torture guy. Drew Horsley had always made me feel slightly uneasy as he seemed awfully keen to tell me about his other work and was difficult to pin down for an audition. Probably he didn’t want the role enough for my liking as he never came across especially...
